HTML 5 is Coming! So why are we having to wait 10 years for an update?
HTML 5 is going to be freaking awesome. And it's about time. Some of these new features have been a long time coming. The internet has clearly changed a lot since 1998, when the last update to HTML (XHTML or H TML 4) was released. The big question is why have the powers that be waited so long? The browser wars did not end because Internet Explorer beat Netscape. The browser wars ended because they failed to innovate for 10 years.
We have essentially had to hack the model with sloppy HTML, Javascript, CSS, Flash, etc. for years. But it looks like finally we are going to have some things like better page semantics to separate content from structure, better form handling and rules, real video and audio features, more interactive elements, server pings, etc.
Some of it is already implemented in browsers, some we have to wait a while longer for. Let's hope this time around web browsers do not stall in their advancement for another 10 years.
