I still don't get Twitter
I have tried very hard to understand why Twitter is relevant. Daily I am bombarded by its league of (geeky) fans on tech blogs proclaim that Twitter is some amazing tool that is revolutionizing the world. I've used it. I've tried. And I still see it as pointless and so I am highly annoyed whenever I see people wasting space in my RSS feed blogging about Twitter. (So here I am blogging about it! haha)
First of all, what geeks reading and writing tech blogs (me being one I guess) don't get is that real people really don't use Twitter. No, seriouslly they don't! These techie morons either physically in the Sillicon Valley vacuum or living with Sillicon Valley colored lenses will argue to the death to the contrary. But no guys... they don't. My wife doesn't know what Twitter is. Neither do any members of my family. And neither do my neighbors, nor the people who sit next to me on planes. Real people don't use Twitter, dammit! Only us geeky people do.
Sure it's been featured on CNN, but that hasn't seemed to help it be used by people outside its little niche though. I acknowledge that sometimes "tech geeks" are the early adopters to technologies that eventually come mainstream. I mean look how RSS went from being a tech geek toy to mainst... oh wait... no it didn't.
I have asked the question over and over again why Twitter is relevant. And no one has a good answer! Why should there be an entire web site around something that is a single feature on Facebook? I already have a huge network of friends on Facebook where I already spend a lot of time interacting with REAL people (not just tech geeks--who aren't real people in this context) and can post many things including links and photos and comment and do all kids of things. And one such feature of Facebook is the mainstay feature the: status message. So why on earth does Twitter need to exist so that we can all update our Facebook status and then head over to Twitter and build up a league of "followers" (when we already theoretically have the same people as Facebook friends) and then update my Twitter status to say the same thing? It just makes no sense.
The other thing that annoys me is the stupid valuation these morons drinking the kool-aid put on it. I read today that Facebook bid $500 million on Twitter? First of all, I don't believe it. Second of all--if they actually did then the reports say it was $500 million in Facebook stock.... which of course is probably relative to the almost as stupid $15 Billion valuation supposedly placed on Facebook by Microsoft... which is a complete fraud anyway, but that's another post. So they didn't accept that supposed Facebook bid but apparently did get more venture capital on a $250 million dollar valuation. IDIOTIC.
Besides the fact that Twitter is completely worthless and a dumb concept anyway (see above) it has absolutely NO business model and not even a business model in theory. No one can rationally see a way for it to ever break a profit. So you're going to value a business with no path to profitability at 250 million...? Huh?
For all of Twitter's niche traffic, coming from geeks and not real people (see above), I've heard that something like 75% of the people are not even coming to Twitter. They are using and interacting and reading it via third party sites and applications through Twitter's flexible and liberal API. So even if they had Google AdSense or some version of it and its horrible eCPM using the text in the Tweets to target the ads... most would never see it. What are they going to embed ads in tweets? How quickly do you think that will turn people away?
Twitter = Fail.
